Opportunities for Indonesian MSMEs to Enter the Global Export Market
Indonesia is rich in diverse local products with great potential for export, especially from the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. Products such as traditional snacks, handcrafted goods made from natural materials, textiles, herbal drinks, and coffee have gained global attention for their uniqueness and cultural value. Increasingly, global consumers are drawn to authentic Southeast Asian products, including those from Indonesia.
However, MSMEs often face complex challenges in exporting. A common issue is the lack of knowledge regarding product standardization, packaging, and required export documentation. Even excellent products may be rejected in international markets if they fail to meet legal or safety standards. For example, food products must have distribution permits and certifications such as BPOM, Halal, or even HACCP, depending on the target country.
Packaging also plays a crucial role in determining a product's success abroad. Informative, hygienic, and attractive packaging increases the competitiveness of export products. Strong branding and a compelling product story add unique value, particularly in Western markets like Europe and North America.
The Indonesian government has been active in supporting MSMEs seeking to export. Initiatives include export training programs by the Ministry of Trade, digital export education by BEKRAF, and simplified licensing via the OSS system. Export marketplaces such as ExportHub and Alibaba also enable small businesses to reach global markets without having physical agents overseas.
With consistency, education, and the willingness to adapt to international regulations, Indonesian MSMEs hold tremendous potential to become successful exporters. Now is the time to ensure our local products not only shine at home but also make an impact globally.
